Why would Windows automatically restart my PC after an update when I'm actually doing something on my PC?



Any way around this?

I try and just be proactive.  I check for updates at least once a night and get them out of the way if I can.

That's a good plan.

They have made updates a core part of the operating system now, it's not just a simple setting anymore, so monkeying with it can make windows unstable or cause it to crash.

Change the time that it installs the updates to when you are asleep or set it to install when it's idle.

Alright, so proactive it is then, lol - Thanks for the replies guys and no, I would certainly not like for Windows to become unstable or crash as CT says.

As mentioned Wrench, my PC was not idle. I was working on a cover with Photoshop and with a 5 second warning, the PC shut down right in my face. And no, nothing was saved, but that's my bad. And the worst of it all, it wasn't the first time it happened to me. But knowing me, I'm sure it will happen again, lol

With that said, I can always change the time that it installs the updates. Maybe that can go along with me being proactive.

Windows 10 has a setting to set the updates to only install when idle but you have to set it, it's not preset.

It also doesn't work. Neither does the install hours setting. I've had those set forever and it will still install outside of the set hours and while the computer is in use. That's why I've made a habit of just checking every day.

I always turn off my internet connection when I am not using my PC and check for updated myself.

Go back to Windows 7 where you have complete control of the updates

I would have agreed about 5 years ago.  Since then Apple has managed to do everything in their power to destroy the MAC.

Great answer Pam, and trust me, it's something that has been at the back of my mind for awhile. I just find them a bit too expensive and Vince might have a point there. I never bought one myself but I have a friend that has one and she's not totally impressed with it.

I've been using Macs since their inception with the "Classic." While they are more expensive, I've always found them dependable, easily upgradable, very intuitive to use and understand and seldom have trouble with viruses. When I went to purchase a new Mac a few months ago, I was talked out of it by the salesman, and he helped me upgrade my 2009 tower - he called it a reliable "workhorse". He said it was far superior for my needs. Have you ever heard of a salesman taking you out of a sale?

That's because they know all the new stuff is pure crap. If you have a 2009 I would try to keep it going as long as you can. Those were great machines.

I still have Novell Perfect Office Word Perfect V6.1 Diskettes and they still work even though I haven't used them in years. I would sell them if someone wanted them like Jazzy who is stuck in the past.
