Star Wars Series

Postby Duotronic93 » Jul Sun 29, 2018 9:09 pm

I recently repackaged my Star Wars collection (1-6 & Rogue One) into new cases to condense down the DVDs and Blu Rays into individual movies and then the extra bonus discs and plan to make a series covering the 6 Lucas Films, Rogue One, and the TV series (once I get them).

This is my preliminary Phantom Menace design. They are pretty basic just to get the layout figured out first.

Update 1: I woke up early and got totally sucked into doing a lot of work on it. I am curious, does anyone know what font is present in the bottom credits or something nice and thin? I'd love to use it for the rest of the words as they feel a little thick.

Update 2: Slight revision of previous below.

Looks OK to me, I might make the spine title a little smaller but if you like it as it is then that's fine too.

Yes I agree. Your spine seems a bit jam packed like this. You might want to give it some breathing room. Nice layout at the back. Keep it up.

Definitely smaller on the spine.  If you get a longer title it won't fit without changing the size and then the spines would not match.

I did a major update to it and love the criticism.

Also, MASSIVE thanks to Ctaulbee for the various logos and resources, you are an absolute saint and cut the amount of time it took to do this cover compared to my last in half.

I love the updates! <3

Although, since this is a WIP, it would have been nice that you keep the original take at the beginning of this thread and add this new update on a separate post so we can see the evolution of what you change/add to your cover along the way.

In the future, I will absolutely do that.

Did a small update to fade the borders.

I agree with alien.  Try messing with the color of the fonts and borders a bit (silver may be your best bet).  I think the rest of your design looks fantastic!

I also thought that the yellow was maybe a bit too much, but then again, it depends what you do with the rest of the sequels. I was pretty much waiting for this to happen. I like the new updates such as the faded border. Very nice so far!

I'm considering shifting the color to be the gold color from the DVD releases.

Thoughts on this gold compared to the more harsher yellow from mine?

Also, I think I'll take a look at making the text and colors on the back silver, while leaving the spine and front gold.

How about if you replace the yellow with the same gold as the DVD release as you mentioned, but at the back you just use the gold for the borders and stroke around your stills and the writing in white? Maybe keep “Every Saga Has A Beginning…” in gold as well. I agree with Star, the whole design that you have on the back is perfect, I would not change that, just play around with the colors as others suggested. You might find the color gold too dark and go with silver. One thing, if you chose gold (or silver), it would look better if you go with the same color at the front, spine and back. Of course, those are only suggestions. Try things out and let us see.

Re: Star Wars Series

Postby ctaulbee » Aug Wed 01, 2018 12:21 am

I think the problem is not that's it's yellow or what shade of yellow it is, but that it's more the fact it's all yellow, you know too much of a good thing maybe.

If it were all some other color (gold or whatever) that would still be the same issue I think.

Notice how they broke up the color with black texts in some areas on the back plus the background is broken up into blue and tan you are black all over.

Think of colors as needing contrast like textures do in order to work, too many colors is bad of course so limit them but only one is not good as then there is no contrast at all.

One thing you could do is make the background behind the features listings yellow and then the text and borders black to keep the same color theme but add contrast.

That would break the back up into three sections adding some contrast to the background as well.

Also you could use some gradients on the texts to keep them from being all the exact same shade (flat), don't get crazy with that, just subtle color shifts within the same shade should work though if you wanted.

This is a quick mock-up and I know where the frames are it looks a little goofy but I don't have layers to work with lol, it's just to give you a idea of what I was talking about, I'm not suggesting you do it exactly like this just food for thought is all.

I did 3 new revisions focusing on colors and more contrast. I do agree that is major issue, once I have a better idea of the colors, I'll look at giving them gradients.

I like version 1, but I prefer version 2 because it offers more contrast with the white and gold. I might also chose the same gold around your stills (strokes) although white is nice as well. But really, it comes down to a personal choice. What I like might differ with what you like or what others like. One thing for sure, it’s an improvement of what you had before.

I like the first as well did you try the credits in white since the logos are white and maybe try the synopsis in white as well on the first one that is.

I'm going to continue working with Version 1 & 2, I'm going to abandon the harsher yellow gold color. It's just too harsh for a quality cover.
