next update:

so i have added the front text in, i'm never sure whether i prefer trilogy or collection (or neither) so that might change later, we'll see.

i have also added the layout and text to the back. i have struggled a little over the text as i realize it is not the easiest to read but i really want the etched in stone look. i might have to have a play around with it a little but not sure if i will be able to make it any more legible.

now i have to see if i can get the screenshots right and see if i can find any images for the front to add above the pyramids that will tie into the film a bit more (haven't found anything yet but will keep looking).

Since a new Mummy movie is out with Tom Cruise and this is a cover of the original three films, I would use "Trilogy" in the title instead of Collection - just my personal opinion. The etched text looks great, but maybe darker to stand out more.

Well there you go, the Queen of spacesavers has given you great advice. :D

I have nothing else to add except what you already know, especially the text at the back. Keep at it, I'm confident you will find the right solution with everyone's help here. Although not mine so far, obviously, lol

just a little update:

just darkened everything, used slightly bolder fonts, changed collection to trilogy, done the spine and away to get started on the screenshots.

I like your design concept. It is always nice to see something different from the norm.  :)

However, I do agree with sauron. The text is very hard to read.

Might try shorter synopsis texts, then the font size can be bigger.

here is the next update:

i have added in the images on the back and altered the framing and hieroglyphs. thanks everyone for the comments, i am going to focus on the text now. i have had an idea for how to get the text to stand out more so will see if i can pull it off and get back to you.

Have you tried adding a line either side of the spine to box off the front and back? Does that makes sense?

yeah it makes sense but no i havent tried that. if i did that it would reduce the space on the spine by 40px which would be quite tight for fitting in the title etc, especially when i do it smaller case sizes.

heres the latest update:

unfortunately what i had in mind didnt turn out very good so i had to go down a different route and ended up going with a less textured background. not sure im feeling it as much as the other one but out of the ones i tried it was the best and helped make the text more legible but if anyone has any suggestions for the background im all ears.

i have also included two other versions that were on the shortlist:

will keep contemplating the background and see how it goes. also havent had a chance to find any images for above the pyramids yet so still a couple of things to tweak.

Have you tried shorter synopsis texts with a bigger font size like CT suggested? I can't help but think there isn't enough spaces between lines for each synopsis. It needs more breathing space. Also, have you tried a lighter font if you go with version 1 of the 3 new ones? Probably not white but lighter? Unless you don't want to create any contrast, then I would prefer your 3rd version (grey). Also, it might be your choice of font that makes it harder to read. Well that's my 2 cents for now.

i havent yet, was just trying out different textures first to see if that would help as the first texture was a little too much texture (i think).

chouette wrote:Also, have you tried a lighter font?

i did try that at one point but it was harder to read than the darker.

chouette wrote:Also, it might be your choice of font that makes it harder to read.

its times new roman i'm using as it was the closest one i could find to match the mummy title, its the first time i have ever used it for a cover as i'm not a big fan but unfortunately i feel like i have to use it for this one.

chouette wrote:Well that's my 2 cents for now.

your 2 cents are welcome any time  ;)

my problem is i feel like all of the new textures dont quite have the same 'feel' as the original. the other thing i was trying was a black background withe the images and text in gold but it just looked a bit cheap. might go back to the original and try the larger text, its currently 7.8 and i'm not a fan of going over 8 but i did prefer the original. who knows maybe something will come to me.  :-?

I actually prefer the coloring of the original - it just "feels" right to me. Sometimes a smaller font with more spacing between the lines is actually easier to read than a larger font.

Cutting some text out of those long synopsis's, increasing the font by half a point and a little stroke will make a huge difference...

i dont think i would ever have thought putting a light coloured stroke on the outside of the text would make a difference, it almost darkens the text.  :-?

so i wnet back to the original texture with the altered text. here it is now:

It's one of those little tricks, you pick up over time.

Contrast or more specifically what causes it is not always as obvious as one would think it would be, sometimes a simple color tone change can increase contrast, because not all colors play well together and not just from a harmonious design aspect but with contrast as well.

That's quite a difference, you can even read it in the preview now, I'm sure the full-sized will be even more clear.
