Carl Lumbly (Supergirl, Doctor Sleep) is the most recent actor to join the cast of Marvel’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which is currently shooting.
Lumbly’s role in the series hasn’t been officially revealed, but according to Deadline it’s possible that the actor could be playing Isaiah Bradley, aka the “black Captain America.”
Bradley was introduced in 2003 in the Marvel Comics limited series Truth: Red, White & Black as a super-powered product of clandestine experiments on African-American soldiers. It’s explained that the “evocative backstory (depicted with imagery that evoked the infamous, real-world Tuskegee syphilis studies) made Bradley a tragic but noble culture symbol for African-American heroes within the Marvel Universe.”
It would be pretty cool if Lumbly ended up playing this character because he’d be perfect for it. This wouldn’t be the first time he played a superhero either. In the 90s he starred in the Fox series M.A.N.T.I.S. which was a sci-fi crimefighter show that was created by Sam Raimi and Sam Hamm. He also played Martian Manhunter's father in the Supergirl series, but he voiced Maritan Manhunter in DC’s animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
Lumbly joins Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. The mismatched pair are military vets and former partners of Captain America “who team up for a global adventure that will test their survival skills — as well as their patience.”
Emily VanCamp reprises the role of Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl (The Alienist) is back as the scheming mastermind, Baroin Zemo. Wyatt Russell will also star in the series as John Walker, aka USAgent, another product of Super-Soldier experiments.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is directed by Kari Skogland, and Malcolm Spellman is the head writer. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ in August.
