Re: Star Trek Original and Next Generation Series covers

Postby stardragon9 » May Fri 01, 2020 4:25 pm

I messed around with the photos a little.  I decided to limit the back to only two photos (one of the crew and one from one of the more popular episodes) and I think it works a little better.  Here is the result:

Thanks for the advice on this one.  I am going to let this one set for a couple of days.  I will them probably turn my attention towards the second season.

Maybe add just a little room around synopsis.  It is pretty close to the red border around the pictures.

I agree with Vincent about the synopsis. Other than that, it is looking very nice.  :)

Good suggestions!  I hadn't realized how close everything looked on the preview (everything was looking far enough away when I was working on it in photoshop).  I messed with the size of the synopsis and space.  For comparison sake, here is the original versus the new one.

Original:

New:

I may also reduce the size of the outline around the pictures as well.  Let me know what you think.

Looks better now.  How about moving the two lines under the last episode down a little or maybe even down to the bottom.  If they were at the bottom it would leave you more room in case the episodes take up more space on the other covers.

Looking good so far, do you know how to justify your text?  Anyhow I like where this is headed, good start.

Not for sure on the 'justify text' part joe.  If you could please elaborate.  If it is something you can do in photoshop, please be aware that I am using photoshop elements 6.0 which does not have a lot of features that the main version has.

ok, not great at this,but... Highlight your text, then in the paragraph panel,  upper icons select the far right, indicated by text line icons that look like a box, click on that, and your text will be fitted into whatever path you have which justifies it to an equal amount of text per line in your text path. then highlight the bottom line of this text and select the far left icon, click on that which will then distribute your text to the left. That's the best I can describe the process, but once you've learned this, you'll find you can shape your text anyway you'd like.

I took a look and my version of photoshop does not include a way to do this.  If I want to form my text around a shape, I have to type it out and the add spaces and form it myself.  Although I am looking into updating my version so that I can do these types of things without having to struggle with them manually.  I appreciate the advice though.

Here is the result of trying to separate the texts:

I think you may be right, it does seem to look better this way.

Well, I stand corrected.  Thanks to some friendly help from ctaulbee, I now know how to justify text in my version of photoshop elements (they hid it under a control shift command).  With this information, my cover texts will have a more uniform and professional look.   :)
Anyways, here is the text justified on the synopsis:

Look so much better now!  Thanks so much chefjoe for suggesting this in the first place.  This is why I love asking people here about my covers, everyone is helpful and always has good tips and advice.   ;)

Here is the preview for the front cover of Season 2:

Like this?

I don't want to make the font too big, otherwise it places the technical data (years and runtime) below the photos.

Thanks chouette.  I am trying to learn more.  I really appreciate all the wonderful help and advice everyone has provided here to help me create better covers.  Season one has been posted here:

Here is a look at the front and spine of the Second Season cover:

I have changed the logo on the spine to the science/medical (engineering will be on the spine of the third season).  Let me know what you think.   ;)

Have you thought about using a black "galaxy" background on the back instead of white?
