The news actually came from the resume of Christopher Painter, a writer for Disney Advanced Media Labs and Disney Interactive. After it was seen there, it was removed. But it was later confirmed by voice actor Eric Bauza (Muppet Babies, Star Wars Resistance, DuckTales) who seemingly confirmed his involvement in another tweet.
I guess this isn’t really surprising news. Disney is going to be wanting to fill up Disney+ with all kinds of original content, and this seems like a character they could have some fun with.
Walt Disney created Oswald in the 1920s, and he first appeared in an animated short film in 1927. He appeared in several films from Disney until 1928. Charles Mintz ended up taking the rights to the character to Universal Studios. After that happened, later that year, Disney ended up creating Mickey Mouse. Universal held on to the rights of Oswald until 2006. Disney CEO Bob Iger picked the rights back up in a deal he made to allow sportscaster Al Michaels to move to NBC Sports.
Disney has yet to officially announce the series, but it will be interesting to see how it eventually turns out.
